We're always on the lookout for good quality free stuff on the web. As a small business, we need to watch the pennies so we're always looking for top stuff that we can get for nothing! There are many, many open source and free software applications out there and we like to share this good stuff around.

See the list below for a quick roundup, whether you need antivirus, an office suite, project management tool or a fully featured graphics editor, we've got something for you.

This is our first choice for free antivirus software for non-commercial home users. With a small footprint, it's light on resources and it's very easy to use. We like the fact that it keeps it's head down most of the time and doesn't bother you with endless questions - it just gets on with the job.

Libre Office logoLibreOffice

LibreOffice is a comprehensive, professional-quality productivity suite that you can download and install for free, with no fear of copyright infringement. There is a large base of satisfied LibreOffice users worldwide. This software is a great alternative to the popular Microsoft Office Suite if you're on a budget.

GIMP logoGIMP

Bring out the gimp! This is a professional image editing package that has everything you need to work with your digital images. It's a really versatile graphics manipulation package and one that we use on a daily basis. There's a steep learning curve if you want to use this to it's full advantage, but this is thankfully backed up by some excellent support. We've provided some links to support information below.

Visit gimp FORUMS. A really friendly and enthusiastic bunch of guys who will do their best to help you if you get stuck. Remember to search the forum in case your question has been answered already.

Inkscape logoInkscape

Inkscape is a professional vector graphics editor. Whether you are an illustrator, designer, web designer or just someone who needs to create some vector imagery, Inkscape is for you, it's THE package for creating graphical designs! We use Inkscape regularly, but like GIMP (above) there's a steep learning curve. Thankfully, there are lots of resources to help you on your way and these are listed below.

Clocking It logoClockingIT

Not so much an application as a collaborative online project management tool. Upload files, create users and clients, plan, report, generate reminders. Again, we use this on a daily basis to keep all of our jobs organised and all of our clients happy.

We've been using this for years, and we recommend it to all our clients. Firefox is fast, secure and customisable. It allows you to choose from oodles of free addons that are quick and easy to install and help you to make Firefox your own.

Thunderbird logoMozilla Thunderbird Mail

Thunderbird Mail is just about our favourite free mail client, featuring everything you could ever eally need in a mail application. With its easy setup, tabbed browsing, migration assistant and lots of addons to customise it the way you want, it's a clear winner. Top level security and intelligent spam filters are all built in as well.

Filezilla logoFilezilla FTP

Filezilla is our favourite FTP client. If you need to transfer files between your local machine and a remote one (such as your server), this is the program you need. Filezilla comes with the full range of excellent features such as drag and drop support, SFTP, configurable transfer speed limits, remote file editing, directory comparison and a whole lot more.

Scribus LogoScribus

Scribus is an Open Source program that brings professional page layout to a multitude of operating systems with a combination of press-ready output and new approaches to page design. Scribus has a modern and user-friendly interface and supports professional publishing features, such as color separations, CMYK and spot colors, ICC color management, and versatile PDF creation.

If you're looking for a free and professional page layout software package then Scribus is it. We use it, and we love it.
